Scholarly and Teaching Engagement: Cultural Humility

Working together with Patricia Hannon, Kevin is engaged in a large-scale project that explores the concept of Cultural Humility – first developed by health care practitioners to foster better outcomes through communication – within educational practice. In October 2020 the NEA Foundation published an article outlining the principles applied in this work:

Patricia and Kevin are preparing a book manuscript on this topic that they plan to complete in the course of 2021. Over the past few years they have also prepared several professional development workshops on Holocaust education, human and civil rights, and cultural humility for teachers under the aegis of the Federal Education Association – Europe.

Student Engagement and COVID-19 Response

In partnership with Dr. Jane Talkington of the Fort Hays State University Center for Entrepreneurship and the FHSU Management Development Center, Kevin has also been a leader in efforts to engage the campus and the regional community in COVID-19 awareness and mitigation efforts.

This work has now resulted in a publication in a major journal of social entrepreneurship and sustainability, Solutions.

In 2020, Kevin’s indispensable Honors College Administrative Specialist Kathay Johnson was awarded Honorable Mention in the National Collegiate Honors Council’s Award for Administrative Excellence competition.

Kevin joined Fort Hays State University in 2019, and shares a commitment to fostering engagement, service, and diversity cross the university’s mission. He collaborates closely with the Dr. Donnette Noble, the Director of Civic Learning and Engagement, Dr. Jane Talkington, Interim Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, and many more extraordinary colleagues.

In 2020 Kevin began serving on the Program Committee of the German Studies Association, responsible for organizing the annual conference. He assisted closely with the conference’s pivot to a virtual format during the summer and fall of that year. He is continuing this service in 2021 as Coordinator of Moderators and Commentators.
